Which payment options should a Pilates studio offer online?
In India, start with UPI, then cards and netbanking, and send a GST invoice if you're registered. Then add payment links, a desk option and a written refund policy.

In India, offer UPI first, then debit and credit cards and netbanking, all through one payment gateway so members can buy a pack or membership at any hour. Send a GST invoice with every payment once you're registered for GST, and keep paying at the desk as a fallback. Outside India, cards and PayPal usually cover what members expect. And write your refund rules down before you take the first online payment.
Start with UPI
UPI is the option many members in India look for first. On a phone, they tap UPI at checkout, their UPI app opens, they approve with their PIN and they're back on your page within moments. On a laptop, they scan a QR code with their phone. Nobody has to find a card and type its number before a 7 a.m. class.
To take UPI online you need a payment gateway, the service that collects the member's UPI, card or netbanking payment and settles it into your bank account. One gateway usually covers all three, so you set it up once. Our guide to payment gateways for studios in India compares the main options on published fees and settlement.
UPI has one failure members remember. Now and then the money leaves a member's account but the purchase doesn't confirm, often because the network dropped mid-payment. Train the front desk to check the payment against its transaction reference before asking anyone to pay again. Charging someone twice for one pack does more harm than a slow checkout.
Add cards, netbanking and payment links
Cards matter for bigger purchases. Some members prefer a credit card for a three-month membership, and some want the card statement as their record. Netbanking suits members who don't use UPI. Both usually come through the same gateway as UPI, so there's little extra to set up.
Each method carries the gateway's transaction charges, and the rates can differ by method. Check them, then decide whether you absorb them or build them into your prices. An unexpected charge at checkout turns a payment into a WhatsApp thread.
Payment links fill the gaps. Many studios send one on WhatsApp when a renewal is due or a member asks how to pay, and the link opens a checkout page with UPI, card and netbanking. Make sure each link is for the right plan at the right amount, and confirm on WhatsApp once it's paid. Our WhatsApp fee reminder templates include wording you can adapt.
| Option | Where it helps | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| UPI | Quick purchases on a phone, at any hour | Payments that leave the account but don't confirm |
| Debit and credit cards | Bigger purchases, such as a long membership | Transaction charges, which can differ by method |
| Netbanking | Members who don't use UPI | A longer checkout, with more steps |
| Payment link on WhatsApp | Renewals, and members who ask how to pay | The right plan and amount in each link |
| Paying at the desk | Walk-ins, and members who prefer to pay in person | Recording it against the member the same day |
| Cards or PayPal, outside India | Members paying from abroad | Which currency you price in |
On StudioFly, online payments are part of Pro and Enterprise and an add-on on Growth. In India they run through your own Razorpay account; outside India, members can pay through PayPal on Pro and Enterprise. The online payments page has the details.
Invoices and desk payments
If you're registered for GST, issue a GST invoice for each sale with your GSTIN, the plan, the amount and the tax, and check with your CA what else it must show and which rate applies to your classes. Some members claim fitness costs from an employer and will ask for one, and you need the record anyway. Say on your price list whether GST is included. Our billing and invoicing page covers invoices in more detail.
Keep a desk option too: a printed UPI QR code at reception, a card machine if you have one, and cash for members who still prefer it. The risk is recording. At 7 a.m., with three members checking in and one asking to renew, a desk payment is easy to forget, and next week that member's pack shows zero. Make one person responsible for entering every desk payment against the member's profile before the next class starts.
Refunds are a policy, not a button
Most gateways let you send money back. The harder part is deciding when you will. Write the rules down and show them at checkout: whether unused packs are refundable, what happens if a member is injured or moves cities, and whether you'll transfer a pack to someone else instead. Refund to the original payment method, so your records and the member's bank statement match.
When the studio cancels a class, return the credit at once, without waiting to be asked. If you send a refund, tell the member it has gone and that their bank decides how quickly it shows. That one message saves several follow-ups.
What members should expect
If you're a member paying online, a good checkout shows the full price, including whether GST is in it, before you pay. You should be able to pay by UPI, get a confirmation straight away and see the pack or membership in your account. Our explainer on how class packs and credits work covers what happens to that pack next.
If a payment seems stuck, keep the transaction reference from your UPI app or bank statement, because the studio needs it to trace the payment. Ask for an invoice if you need one for your records or an employer claim.
Questions people ask
Can I pay for Pilates classes with UPI?
Yes, at most studios in India that take payments online. You choose UPI at checkout, your UPI app opens and you approve the payment with your PIN. On a laptop, you scan a QR code with your phone instead. Many studios also accept UPI at the front desk through a printed QR code.
Will I get a GST invoice for my class pack?
Yes, if the studio is registered for GST: it should issue a GST invoice for your purchase. Many booking apps email it or keep it in your account. If you need one in your company's name for an employer claim, ask the studio before you pay rather than after.
My payment went through but the pack isn't showing. What should I do?
Don't pay again. Send the studio the transaction reference from your UPI app or bank statement, with the time you paid. The studio can match it against its payment records and add the pack to your account. If the payment failed at the gateway, the money usually comes back to your account by itself.
Should a studio pass payment gateway charges on to members?
Building the charges into your prices is usually simpler than passing them on. Gateway transaction charges can differ by method, and your gateway's terms may limit surcharges, so check them before you decide. If you do add a charge, show it before checkout and on your price list, since a surprise at the payment screen tends to stall the sale.
Do Pilates studios refund unused class packs?
Many studios don't refund a class pack once it has started. Some refund for a medical reason or a move, and some transfer the pack to a friend instead. Read the refund terms at checkout before you buy a large pack, and ask the studio to explain anything unclear.
