Should you book Pilates classes in the studio's app or on its website?

Many studios run one booking account behind both the app and the website. What the member app lets you do, and how to pick the easier way to book.

Use whichever is quicker for you. At many studios the member app and the website open the same booking system, so a class you book on one shows up on the other, with the same pack balance and the same cancellation rules. The thing to get right is how you sign in: use the same phone number or email every time, or you can end up with two accounts and a pack that seems to have disappeared.

Why the app and the website are often one account

Very few studios build their own booking system. They use studio software, which usually gives them a booking page for the website and a member app, both reading from the same timetable. Book the Saturday 8 a.m. reformer class on the website and the spot comes off the same count the member app shows. Cancel it in the member app, and the website shows the spot free again.

Sometimes the studio's own website shows only the timetable, and the Book button opens a booking page in a new tab. That page can look quite different from the rest of the site. It's still the same system, just styled differently.

Now and then the two really are separate. A studio that has moved to new software may still have an old app on members' phones, or its website may have a simple form that sends your request to the front desk. You'll usually spot it: a different login on each, prices that don't match, or a page that says "WhatsApp us to book". If so, ask the studio which one holds your pack, and book only there.

What the member app lets you do

A studio's member app is the signed-in part of its booking system, where you manage your own classes, plan and payments. Some studios call it a client portal or member portal, or simply My Account. What you can do there depends on what the studio has switched on, but a well-run one covers most of this:

  • Book a spot in a class, after seeing how many are left.
  • Cancel or reschedule inside the studio's cancellation window, without messaging anyone.
  • Join the waitlist when a class is full, and see your place on it.
  • Check your pack balance, its expiry date and your upcoming bookings.
  • Buy a new pack or membership online, at studios that take online payments.
  • Check in at the door, often by scanning a QR code.

"How many classes do I have left?" is a question every front desk knows well. You can answer it yourself in the member app, because it shows the same record the desk is looking at. Our post on how class packs and credits work explains when a credit gets used, and our guide to class waitlists covers what happens after you join one.

In the browser or installed

Some studios give you an app to install. Others give you a member app that opens from a link in your phone's browser and behaves like any other app once you're signed in. For booking classes, both do the job, and the differences are small.

Why the browser works well

There's nothing to install or update, and it works on any phone, old or new. You can send the link to a friend who wants to try a class, and they can book a trial without installing anything. If you go to two studios, you don't end up with two more apps.

Add it to your home screen and it opens with one tap. In most phone browsers, open the menu or the Share button and choose Add to Home Screen. From then on it sits next to your other apps, and it's easy to forget it was never installed.

When an installed app helps

An installed app can show its own notifications on your lock screen. That matters most where a studio uses app notifications to tell you about waitlist places. In India, many studios send confirmations and reminders on WhatsApp, so you'll get the important messages either way. The cost is phone storage, updates and one more login to remember.

Habits that make booking easier

Sign in the same way every time, with the same phone number or email. If you're not sure which one you used, the front desk can tell you.

Read the cancellation window before you book, not after. It's normally shown on the class or in the studio's policy, and it decides if a late change costs you a credit. Our guide to cancelling or rescheduling a Pilates class online goes through the details.

Keep WhatsApp notifications on for the studio's number. If a waitlist place opens late in the evening for an early class the next day, that message is often how you'll find out in time.

And book it yourself rather than messaging the desk. At 7 a.m. the front desk is setting up reformers and checking in the first batch, so a booking request on WhatsApp can sit unread until the class has already started.

If you run a studio

Give members one booking link and one way to sign in, and put that link everywhere: your website, your social media profiles and your WhatsApp welcome message. If you've changed systems, retire the old app or page so nobody books into a timetable you no longer use. StudioFly's member app runs in any phone browser with nothing to install, and members book their spot, cancel within the window you set, join waitlists and check their pack balance there. That leaves your front desk free to look after the people actually in the studio.

Questions people ask

Is a Pilates studio's app the same as its website?

Usually, yes: at many studios the app and the website open the same booking system. Your bookings, pack balance and waitlist places are identical in each, so you can book on the website at your desk and cancel from the app on your way home. If the logins or prices differ, check with the front desk before you book anything.

What can I access in a Pilates studio's client portal?

In a studio's client portal or member app, you can usually book and cancel classes, join a waitlist, and see your upcoming bookings, pack balance and plan expiry. Many studios also let you buy a new pack or membership online and check in when you arrive. The exact list depends on what your studio has switched on, so if something's missing, ask the front desk.

Do I need to install an app to book Pilates classes?

Not if the studio's member app runs in your phone's browser. Many do, so you open a link, sign in and book, with nothing to install. If your studio offers an installed app as well, it usually books into the same timetable. Pick whichever you'll actually open; adding the member app to your home screen puts it one tap away.

Why does my pack balance look different in the app?

A different pack balance in the app usually means you have a second account. If you booked a trial with your email and later signed up with your phone number, the studio's system may treat you as two people, each with its own balance. Ask the front desk to sort out the duplicate and move your pack to the account you use, then sign in that way every time.

Why does my studio ask me to book online instead of messaging?

Booking online is quicker and more accurate for you and the studio. A booking you make yourself goes straight onto the class list, with the spot counted and the reminder set. A WhatsApp message has to be read, checked against the timetable and entered by hand, often between classes. It also leaves a record, which helps if a late cancellation is ever questioned.
